Apple Took China. The Pros Did It in Three Days.

Skip the launch-week vibes. Look at the sell-through.

Counterpoint Research says China’s iPhone 18 Pro series moved 12% more units in its first three days than the iPhone 17 Pro series did across its entire first week a year ago. Three days beat seven. That is not a soft open.

That sprint was enough to put Apple at No. 1 in China’s smartphone market for Week 38 (September 14–20) with a 33% share — even though the Pros were only on sale for the last three days of that week. The rest of the week was not a Pro week. The share chart still looks like one.

The market around it is still soft

Context matters. Counterpoint’s China weekly tracker has been painting a weak handset market — overall new-smartphone sell-out down on the order of 17% year over year in recent months. Rising component costs, buyers sitting on last year’s phones, the usual China cycle. The Pro launch did not heal the category. It punched a hole in a soft chart and Apple walked through it.

Why Pros, specifically

Counterpoint’s read, as relayed by the trades, lands on three levers — none of them mystical:

  1. No base iPhone 18 yet. Apple staged the Pros first. Some shoppers who might have waited for the cheaper 18 are buying up instead of waiting down.
  2. Everyone else’s flagships got expensive. Premium Android pricing has climbed; Apple absorbing some component pressure makes the Pro look relatively saner next to rivals that took bigger sticker jumps.
  3. Channel heat. Carriers and retailers piled on promotions and inventory support — “aggressive channel support” in analyst-speak, which usually means money on the street.

None of that is a camera keynote. It is distribution, timing, and relative price. Boring. Effective.

October 23 is the real stress test

The iPhone Duo goes on sale October 23. China already over-indexes on foldables versus the rest of the world. A strong Pro open does not guarantee Duo demand — different price band, different buyer — but it does mean Apple is not walking into foldable week with a cold China franchise. The Pro series just reminded Beijing’s channel that Apple can still take the week when it wants the shelf.

Watch the Duo’s first three days the same way Counterpoint watched these. If three days can beat a week again, the China story stops being a rebound narrative and starts being a product one.
