iPhone Duo Apps Can Ship Now. Skip the Update and You Get Black Borders.

The iPhone Duo is about two and a half weeks from customers’ hands, and Apple has now opened the door for apps built for it. In a developer news post on Monday, Apple said developers can submit iPhone Duo-optimized apps and games in App Store Connect starting today, ahead of the foldable’s October 23 launch (MacRumors). Pre-orders open October 16, per 9to5Mac.

Your old apps will work, just not full-screen

The key detail for anyone buying a Duo: existing App Store apps will run on it automatically, but only apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later can resize to fill the whole inner display. Unoptimized apps will show black borders, according to MacRumors.

That inner display is the Duo’s big selling point. Apple’s launch announcement puts it at 7.6 inches, and Apple says the inner and outer displays share the same aspect ratio so content scales between them. Letterboxed apps undercut exactly that, which gives developers a real reason to ship an update before launch day.

What Apple is giving developers

Apple’s checklist is short:

  • Recompile with Xcode 27.1, which adds development support for iPhone Duo.
  • Use Device Hub to preview how an app behaves on iPhone Duo across all its poses and orientations.
  • Sign up for an iPhone Duo workshop if you want hands-on help.
  • Update App Store assets. Apple has published new screenshot and app preview specs for its latest devices, design templates including new product page headers and search result assets, and a new preview tool in App Store Connect that shows how a product page will look on iPhone Duo.

The deadline that’s easy to miss

There’s one firm date further out. Starting April 2027, any app or game submitted to the App Store will need to include iPhone Duo screenshots. That’s six months of runway, but it applies to every submission, not just apps that adopt the new layout.

Why it matters

A foldable lives or dies on its apps. A big inner screen full of letterboxed apps feels like a phone app on an iPad, and that impression is hard to shake in early reviews. By opening submissions now, Apple is betting the apps people use most will have proper layouts by October 23. How many of them do won’t be clear until the Duo is actually in buyers’ hands.

If you’re planning to pre-order, it’s worth checking for updates to your must-have apps in the first few weeks. If they still have black bars on the inner screen, that developer hasn’t rebuilt for the Duo yet.
