Gurman: The New MacBook Pro Will Be 'Significantly Lighter'

Apple’s next MacBook Pro was already the rumor package: Tandem OLED, a touchscreen, a Dynamic Island. Mark Gurman’s latest Power On drop, via 9to5Mac, adds the detail people who actually commute with a 16-inch will care about. It will be significantly lighter.

Not a vague “thinner chassis” whisper. Gurman says Apple reengineered the interior — miniaturizing parts and rearranging components — so the machine is much easier to carry. He does not give a pound figure. He does not need to. Today’s 16-inch Pro can hit 4.8 pounds. The 15-inch MacBook Air sits around 3.3. Any real cut shows up the first time you sling the bag over a shoulder.

Timing and silicon

The overhaul is still aimed at before the end of November — “by next month” in Power On’s framing. Specs stay on the currently shipping M5 Pro and M5 Max. Apple is reportedly skipping the higher-end slice of the M6 family to accelerate M7, which is a polite way of saying these Pros get the redesign first and the next architecture later.

Software has to catch up

Touch and Dynamic Island are not freebies on the OS side. Gurman flags macOS Golden Gate changes for both, landing around macOS 27.2. That is the quiet risk in every hardware leap: the glass arrives before the cursor habits do.

Why this one sticks

OLED and touch were already priced into the rumor cycle. Weight was not. Cupertino spent a generation stuffing more into the same shell. Now the pitch is subtractive — less mass, same class of machine. If the scale matches the adjective, the Pro finally stops feeling like the Air’s heavier sibling and starts feeling like something you choose on purpose.
